First it was Yakuza: Like a Dragon that posed PlayStation 5 players with upgrade issues, and now it's the turn of Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time. While this latest issue doesn't appear to be quite as widespread as the one which plagued Ichiban Kasuga's quest to make it onto PS5, some fans of the bandicoot are currently unable to upgrade to the current-gen version. Activision has acknowledged the problem on Twitter, stating it is "actively investigating" the issue.
We're sure the problem will be fixed for all within the next 24 hours or so, but for some, the wait to play Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time at 60-frames-per-second in 4K goes on. In the meantime, there's always the 8/10 Push Square review you could have a read of, where we speak of the game's PS5 implementation.

Guess I'll wait until this has been sorted out. Already played through the game on PS4 anyway but I'm interested to see what it's like on the better hardware.
Also I got an email from Sony stating that Crash 4 is 35% off in Brazil. Not sure it this is global.
Hope it's all sorted out soon.
Glad its not just me!
Remember when people called Smart Delivery a whole lot of PR to try to sell consoles? Remember when people said that Microsoft shouldn't hold itself back by also focusing on Xbox One and Series X? Remember people chanting the mantra "Sony believes in generations"?
Yeah, don't hear about these issues on Team Green when it comes to these game upgrades. Stuff just works. Perhaps there was something to looking at the reality of cross-generation releases.
That being said, I am loving my PS5 so far! It came today.
I got it all hooked up and everything is ready to rock! Just need time to actually sit down and play some games. Setup was super easy.
I did have a conflict with PS Plus Collection and my physical games installed on an External that made me have to delete the games and reinstall them, but otherwise it's all smooth sailing.
I only have one PS4 upgradeable game: Spider-Man Miles Morales. I still have yet to put it into the disc drive to see how easy it is to get the PS5 version installed. I won't be buying PS4 versions of anything anymore, now!
My Series X and PS5 are sitting next to each other in vertical orientation and my house hasn't exploded! My Switch is nearby too. No fires.
All 8 people that got a PS5.
Yeah this has been bugging me.
So how many times is this going to happen before Sony overhauls the process? There's obviously some unresolved issues.
That's strange. I downloaded the PS5 version of Crash 4 today and played about 2 hours no problem. Hopefully this gets sorted out quickly for people who are having trouble upgrading.
Interesting. I had no problems downloading PS5 version (wasn't even hard to find anymore, it was the default). But honestly, it's the game that didn't really need the upgrade (I can barely notice the difference when I'm trying).
It's an EU Store problem for those wondering, the North American store seems to be fine, not sure about other markets.
@GamingFan4Lyf It's embarrassing, as far as OS/Store/Network Infrastructure, Sony is an absolute disaster. This is just baffling, I honestly do not understand how difficult it can be to put in your database "If X owns version A, then version B is free". This should not be a difficult thing! 🤣
Bet we're gonna be waiting half a generation again to get folders.
Yeah this has happened to me...
Insert gif of the giant from Twin Peaks saying "It is happening again."
I tried to follow the instructions before to insert a gif and it failed.
It is an EU problem. You cannot add the PS5 version because I have the "Crash Bandicoot™ 4: It’s About Time - Tracker". Basically, it is the same problem as Trails 4 when I couldn't download my preorder.
I’m doing ok with my smart delivery, yes I have a series x as well and quality of life in design and firmware with things like this are so much easier.
Joking a side it also gets a bit confusing with any PS4/PS5 game, mine tries download both copies sometimes like sack boy etc.
It’s been four months now and Sony are starting to get on my nerves a bit now, are their coders sleeping.
Seems to be an issue regarding EU customers who preordered and downloaded the demo prior to release date.
I’m having issues too
@NateGoesLive I think it's not related to the demo as I am having the issue but within the EU (UK) and I did NOT download the demo prior to release, just bought the game when it was 75% off.
Hopefully a swift resolution as I was planning to play it this weekend since I have some free time.
Been unable to get anything more than the ‘learn more’ tab which kindly informs me I already own the game! Yes, that’d be why I want to upgrade. Hopefully Activision won’t take long and I can finally download the PS5 version. It’s about bloody time ...
Yep in the same boat too!
@GamingFan4Lyf It goes back way earlier than that, the handling of DLC upgrades for free (360 -> XB1, PS3 -> PS4) for Rocksmith and Rock Band when the franchises came to PS4/XB1 back in 2014 and 2015 respectively were way more problematic for PS (especially Europe) than Xbox. Both had problems but the problems were resolved faster on Xbox.
I had hoped that people wouldn't have to experience something like that again but it feels like these PS5 upgrade problems are becoming too common.
Another reason not to bother with the Ps5 yet. I am so glad i am holding off on the Ps5/Series XlS for awhile stlill though i currently have the money for both systems and i had a chance for a series s but i ignored it
Its unfortunate thing to happen. Only hope in time that Sony can sort out the whole upgrade system
Has anyone got any tips for me for this game?
I’m an older gamer (have played all my life and enjoy platformers) but this is my first Crash and it’s hard...
Just wondered if any Crash Veterans out there can give a bit of advice.
Luckily, I didn't have a problem with that. I'll tell you what though, I always thought Crash 4 looked amazing on PS4, but wow, it looks much better on the PS5! I had both systems running and went to various locations to compare and I'm amazed! The PS4 version actually looks blurry to me now when switching back and forth between the two. It's crazy.
It's so effing sad that more than 24 hours later it still doesn't work lol
EU, downloaded the demo, brought PS4 digital version on release and attempted to upgrade. PlayStation says no. I really think this "upgrade" system is lacking management. I have a Series X and none of these issue have cropped up. It's a shame. Sony please sort this out.
@invictus4000 That joke got old months ago.
Glad it's not just me having this problem though.
@Gamer83 I platinumed it on ps4 so I heard heard it was going to do a spiderman remastered a which I also platinumed and have all the trophies pop but crash only gives u half the trophies
@Mince it only looks great if u have the right TV.another thing is that if u have platinumed it on ps4 u should expect all the trophies on the PS5 version to pop right away.wrong as only half pops
How does the free PS5 upgrade even work anyway? I have the physical PS4 disc release, will I be eligible for the free upgrade?
@THGhost yeah. Search Crash Bandicoot 4 It's About Time Upgrade on the shop and it gives you the option to upgrade free with disc. Download is about 20GB.
Before you delete the 45GB PS4 version though, make sure you go on it and Upload the save file from in game, to then transfer it to the PS5 version of the game. Once that's done, go ahead and delete the PS4 version and free up some space. You'll still need to insert the PS4 disc to play the PS5 version.
Just checked ... AGAIN!! ... how can this not be resolved yet? Almost 3 days!! Must be one of the easiest things to fix.
@fluggy
Yep, I just tried, and, NOTHING!
Anyone got a solution for the PS5 upgrade?!
@Rocky1972
Interesting. I didn't Platinum this game like I did Spider-Man so I didn't transfer my save over, just decided to start the PS5 version from scratch.
@Saucymonk Some jokes are so grounded in reality that they transcend being mere jokes...
@Mince I bet you're not very fun at parties. Thanks for the video though! Super helpful!
Just got my copy in Japan (US physical version of the game) and had no problem upgrading.
I am liking it so far! It is more Crash without big changes (but with some new mechanics) and that is exactly what I wanted.
Shocking that it still hasn't been fixed, like 4 days later!! and the silence from Activision other than that initial vague tweet is poor.
They've got a fix lined up, it'll just be £9.99 to get it installed, because you didn't buy the game on a Tuesday afternoon between the hours of 2am - 4am, so you've missed the window.
@GHockey Thanks. Unfortunately no such thing exists on the UK PSN Store for me.
@THGhost - Weird. It was on the UK PS5 store for me on the first day it was available. I actually just searched Crash and it was the first thing that came up with the option of upgrading disc free or buying digital for £38.99. I had the crash 4 disc in the ps5 at the time, so maybe you could try that 🤷♂️
@GHockey It's very weird. I just searched "Crash" again after reading your comment with the PS4 disc inserted and the first thing that came up for me was just the PS4 version of the game for £38.99. No option for a free PS5 upgrade.
@THGhost Hmmm. I can only think that maybe they've removed it to try and fix the digital upgrade issue 🤔
@THGhost Just had a look and on the main store page there's a small sponsored thumnail in the top 'Must see' section that leads to the PS5 version, but that's the only place I can currently find it and sometimes it isn't even there.
@invictus4000 so not true.
@GHockey Just checked again today with the disc inserted and found the PS5 upgrade! Took them long enough. Thanks for the info
